Max Faget was an Engineer who worked at NACA, (the predecessor to NASA), and continued his career at NASA. He was instrumental in the design of the Mercury capsule, and this type of blunt bodied design is still prevalent to this day. He also designed the Mercury Launch escape tower, this type of system is also still in use to this day. He also worked on the Gemini & Apollo programs and had wide reaching influence on the design of these spacecraft as well. He held several patents for his designs, and was still very active in the shuttle era. He was held in great esteem by his peers, and had a touch of genius about him.
