The Super Guppy was a plane that was developed by Jack Conroy, who at the time was a retired USAF pilot. He converted a Boeing 377 Stratocruiser, heavily modifying it and using parts from a variety of aircraft. Its bloated fuselage was the reason for its nickname of the Pregnant Guppy. The name Guppy stuck with the range of aircraft as they evolved. At the time NASA was in need of an outsized aircraft to transport parts of its Apollo space vehicles. Conroy paid for the development and construction off his own back and eventually got the aircraft certified and convinced NASA to use it. It was used to move items the length and breadth of the US, and was capable of transport a complete third stage of the Saturn V.
In the early 70's Airbus ordered two of the planes, and this section of skin came from one of those planes. Although this plane was not operated by NASA i thought as it had such a close association with the program it deserved a place in the collection.
Airbus also had another two of the SGT variants built in the early eighties bringing the amount of this variant to four. Later in life one of these four was purchased by NASA who were still operating it in the mis 2000,s
