Apollo 9: Group of Sixteen Vintage Color Transparencies Directly from the Collection of NASA Photo Expert J. L. Pickering. A large group of vintage 4" x 5" NASA color transparencies documenting Apollo 9, the first crewed test of the Lunar Module, flown by James McDivitt, David Scott, and Russell Schweickart in March 1969. Among the images are: Dramatic launch of Apollo 9's Saturn V rocket from Kennedy Space Center, March 3, 1969; The crew aboard the recovery ship; Astronauts inside the spacecraft during orbital operations, suited and conducting mission tasks, and many others. Apollo 9 was a crucial dress rehearsal for the Moon landings, proving the Lunar Module's life-support systems, propulsion, and EVA capabilities. These photographs capture the mission's essential moments, from launch and in-orbit LM testing to the crew's work inside the spacecraft, representing the bridge between Apollo's Earth-orbital missions and the subsequent lunar expeditions
