A section of tyre from the Space shuttle landing gear nosewheel. The sample is encased in Lucite and is one of a set of three that were produced by the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation. Information about the Foundation is located on the Apollo 9 Lucite page.

The tyre was one of two on the nosewheel, and was used for two missions. The main landing gear tyres were used only once, the nosewheels were used for a second time if not too badly worn from the first flight. It flew as part of Atlantis on STS-27 (December 2-6 1988), and Columbia STS-28 (August 8-13 1989). It was used for a variety of purposes, civilian research missions, satellite repairs, and construction of the ISS. One of its other primary uses was for Department of Defense flights. The flights were classified and cloaked in secrecy and STS-27 & 28 were both this type.

It deployed a single satellite, USA-34. NASA archival information has identified USA-34 as Lacrosse 1, a side-looking radar, all-weather surveillance satellite for the US National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).[4]

Atlantis was returned to the Kennedy Space Center on 13 December and moved into an OPF on 14 December 1988.
