During the Gemini 4 mission Ed White became the first American to spacewalk. He was the second person to leave the confines of a spacecraft, the first being the Russian Alexey Leonov. This image was taken by the mission commander Jim McDivitt from his seat in the capsule. The excursion went well, but could have ended badly as there were troubles latching the hatch after he had got back inside. Fortunately, the hatch was closed securely and both men returned safely
