The Mercury space program was responsible for getting the first American into space. On May 5th-1961 Alan Shepard completed his suborbital flight aboard a Mercury Capsule named Freedom 7. Prior to the manned Mercury flights there were a series of test flights. One of the test flights was named Big Joe 1. The model has been built to depict this flight and includes a small piece of flown material from the capsule.
