The scorched Apollo 9 spacecraft, cradled in a flotation collar, is hoisted aboard the USS Guadalcanal, prime recovery ship, after safely carrying the Apollo 9 crew to splashdown in the Atlantic Ocean.
Splashdown occurred in the Atlantic Ocean at 12:00:53 p.m., 13 March 1969 less than five miles from the prime recovery ship, USS Guadalcanal and 780 nautical miles southeast of Cape Kennedy.
