Steve Bales is steeped in the legend of the first lunar landing. He was the Guidance Officer on duty in the Control Centre during the landing phase.

He dealt with several problems during the landing that had the potential for an abort being called. The most famous of these was the call to carry on with the landing when alarms were being thrown up by the Guidance computer on board the Lunar Module. Bales, aided by his backroom staff, identified the cause of the alarms and informed the flight director that all was go to carry on, and to ignore the alarms.
