Al was the Command module pilot on the first of what are called the J missions. NASA had by now found their feet with the program and the flights had become more routine. To keep the public interested, and to partly justify the vast sums of money being spent the J missions were more highly focused on the scientific research aspect. They included a rover so that they could travel further, more supplies of food, fuel, water, and oxygen. This meant they could extend their stay on the lunar surface. The service module was fitted with a whole suite of scientific instruments that mapped the lunar surface and the surrounding space. One of the “perks” resulting from of all the science that was carried out was that the command module pilot got to carry out a spacewalk on the return home from the moon. The spacewalk was to retrieve film canisters from the SIM bay in the body of the service module.
The image shows Al floating serenely in the darkness on has way to fetch the film canisters. This photo was one that Jon Hancock digitally enhanced for me and was signed by Al in person at an appearance in the UK.
