Alexy Leonov was the first person to conduct an EVA, commonly known as a spacewalk. This was early in the “Space Race”, and at this juncture the Russians were setting a number of firsts, and making the US effort appear decidedly second rate. In 1975 he was part of the Russian crew for the Apollo-Soyuz Test Program. Leonov was a very popular figure who was revered in his homeland, and was respected and very well liked worldwide.
