The V2 was originally used as a missile by the Germans towards the end of WW2. Many of the scientists who developed it were relocated to the US at the end of the war, along with a sizeable amount of the hardware. The US then launched a series of them, and in the procees kickstarted their space program

Here is a nozzle from the fuel system, this nozzle sprayed fuel into the rocket  bell.
