Gordon Cooper was one of the original Seven, the first astronauts selected for the Mercury program. He flew in space twice, Mercury-9 and Gemini 5 as Commander.

The signature is on the box of a Mercury GI Joe. As the item was sold without a Certificate of Authenticity an opinion as to whether it is genuine was sought from Steve Zarelli. Steve has a business called Zarelli Space Authentication and for a fee he will provide a range of services from an e-mail opinion to a full inspection with a written certificate.
