Access pass for the viewing area for the Apollo 9 launch.
The reason for obtaining the pass was primarily to expand the number of items in the collection relating to Apollo 9. That in mind i did not pay much attention to who the pass may have been issued to. After receiving the pass i became intrigued as to what a Dependent Viewing Area was, so i contacted Bill Sawchuck. Bill is a member of the Facebook Space Memorabilia & Flown Artifactsgroup and has a detailed knowledge about the subject. He kindly provided the following explanation
There were basically three different types of viewing badges for Apollo launches: Viewing Stand (VIP), Press Site, and Dependent viewing aera. Dependent badges were issued by NASA to space worker and other members of the accredited press for use by their chosen friends and family members to view the launch from areas along the NASA causeway. The VIP area was the closest official viewing site to Launch Complex 39, while the dependent viewing area was the furthest away.
All badges represent an up close view of the same history. It’s just a difference of a few miles in the end.
I’ve attached a photo of a viewing stand and press badge from Apollo 9 for reference. Hope that helps.
