The V2 rocket was designed and built by the Germans during the Second World War as a weapon of terror. At the end of the war the American forces transported approximately 300 railcar freight wagons of components from Europe to New Mexico. It was here that The German engineers who had agreed to move to the US as an alternative to living in a post war Europe worked alongside their American counterparts rebuilt and repurposed the V2 for research. 67 rockets were launched over a period of six years carrying out a wide variety of experiments. This testing and examination of the hardware and the knowledge gained from the Germans undoubtedly gave the US space program a massive kickstart.

The fragment was cut from the flown tail section of a V2 that was on display at the White Sands Missile Range Museum at Las Cruces, New Mexico. The certificate description is a bit ambiguous and does not totally confirm from which test flight it came from, an e-mail has been sent to the museum for confirmation

After a fair few e mails to various museums and institutions in an effort to track down which flight the piece came from, with no luck I might add I eventually made contact with Kem Havekotte. The conversation was in a Collect Space forum. It has narrowed it down to the year 1946, but the actual flight number remains unknown
