The base for the model has been constructed using the New Ware Kit NW 129
The kit contains a launch platform made from resin, and photo etched parts. The platform is a part representation of the real platform and is not the complete scale item.
First up the parts for the main section were cleaned of flash and made ready for dry fitting
The profile was marked out on a piece of board and the sides were sanded to ensure a good fit, and that they were square.
When everthing was tidied up and true the assembly was place (upside down) on the board, with some brackets to hold it in place ready for gluing
Epoxy glue was used, firstly a small amount to hold everything together. The dams were built at the four corners. These were then filled with glue, and a threaded insert. The middle image shows the inserts held on jig plate to position them. The glue was poured and then the plate positioned. The corners were done two at a time.
All glued up, and the inserts all in place. These will be used to fix a black glossy perspex plate to the bottom
A base for the launch pad was drawn up and ordered, the material is 5mm thick black glossy perspex.
The material comes with the locating holes pre-cut as per the drawing, all that was needed was to countersink the holes and trial fit to the base with some screws
Included are three tail service masts. These held electrical and fluid lines that connected to the rocket and they disconnected at launch and swung up out of the way. These had the pour plug cut from the base and cleaned up. Next the lattice structures were cut from the PE fret and glued. The lattice was attached to the base with superglue. Then the shrouds were cleaned up, but not yet glued as they will be painted first.
The base includes the hold down posts, these are the four structures that the rocket sat on. They were cleaned up and made ready for painting
All the items were dry fitted to the base, including the base of the first stage to ensure everything lined up
There were 3 mobile launch platforms built, and each one was numbered at each corner with the build number, and the side number. The platform used for Apollo 9 was Number 2, so a set of paint masks were made using the Cameo 4 .Included is a mask for the nameplate at the front. A test was done to see how the number ID looked
The MLP colour in some images appears to be a blue, and in others a grey. Some colours were sprayed to see which would be appropriate
The colour chosen was MRP-045 Dark Blue Ukrainian AF Sukhoi Su27 . The base was painted, then masks cut & the markings were sprayed
The black Perspex baseplate was fixed to the platform, this has the securing rod attached to it. With the tail mast towers & hold down structures in place the display base is complete
