Tom Stafford was the Commander of the mission which was a nearly complete dress rehearsal for the first landing. Every part of the mission was carried out bar the landing, a descent was started, and at a predetermined height they stopped and cast away the descent stage of the LM, and returned to the command module, and from there to home.
