Skylab was Americas first space station. The program started with the unmanned launch of the station in May 1973, and thereafter three crews flew up and spent time aboard the station. The last crew left in February 1974. The station then circled the earth until July of 1979 when it de orbited and burnt up in the earths atmosphere. Due to a slight miscalculation of the de orbiting control , coupled with the fact that the debris did not burn up as quickly as anticipated some material was scattered over a sparsely populated area of south Australia. No body was injured and a reasonable amount of debris was recovered.
