Gene was the commander of what was to be the last Apollo program moon landing. He became the 11th man to set foot on the moon, followed by his crewmate Harrison Schmitt. He also became the last man from the program to depart the moon at the end of the mission. It was the second time he had been to the moon, the previous visit was with Apollo 10, that time he did not land
