Grumman contracted various model making companies to produce a representation of the Lunar Module. These were gifted to dignitaries and officials, and were also available to the general public to purchase from the Grumman factory shop.
There were a few manufacturers used to produce these models, two of which were Topping Inc, and Precise Models.
Models that were produced post Apollo 11 have the Neil Armstrong “One Step” quote and the landing date and time printed on the base, alongside the NASA & Grumman logos. The models that were produced prior to this only have the two logos on the base.
The models seen for sale vary in price, and the variation is mainly due to two factors. The first being how “white” the model is. The models if left out in natural light yellow quite badly. The second being is how complete the model is, the antenna and thrusters are quite delicate items and are prone to breakage.
This is the second of the two in the collection, and if you note the date acquired you will see that it is the same as the other one. I didn’t go out with the intention of owning two, there is a bit of a story attached. Both models were listed for sale at auction and I placed a pre-bid on both. The boxed item came up first and after a hectic session of bidding I won the lot. With my mission successfully completed off I toddled to the pub for a celebratory beer or two. My logic being that as about five people had bid against me for the model there was no chance that just a smallish pre-bid would secure the second one. I woke up the next morning with a very sore head and proceeded to check my mails, and was totally surprised to find that I was now the proud owner of a second one.
This example is yellowed, but not significantly, and it is complete with no missing items. I have it out on display in a bespoke case that was built for it. The case was built with Perspex VE acrylic, which absorbs 99.99% of UV rays. It appears to have done the trick as the model has not yellowed any further since it was first placed on display in 2009
