This piece is a section of the astronaut couch backing material, from the Command Module Odyssey. The three original couches were removed from the command module after recovery. Alternative couches were fitted at a later date during a refurbishment of the displayed capsule.

The sample is encased in Lucite and is one of a set of three that were produced by the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation. Information about the Foundation is located on the preceeding page.

Apollo 13 is probably the second most remembered After Apollo 11 the mission that placed the first humans on the moon. It is remembered for the fact that it was a successful failure. On the way to the moon there was an explosion aboard the spacecraft. The result of this was a crippled spacecraft that only had a limited amount of electrical power, water, and to a lesser extent oxygen. These three are critical to sustaining life outside of the earth’s influence. With an outstanding team effort, immense ingenuity, perseverance, courage, and endurance the crippled craft was looped around the moon and the crew successfully returned.
